Wholemeal Bread (margarine method)

20 minutes
30 minutes baking + 30 minutes to prove
Makes 3 loaves


  • 1 ½ lbs wholemeal four (strong)
  • 4oz strong white flour
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1oz fresh yeast
  • 1oz lard
  • ¾pt warm water
  • 1 dessert spoon of syrup


  1. Mix together flour and salt, rub in lard.
  2. Mix together water (hand-hot), syrup and yeast. Leave to disperse.
  3. Make well in centre of flour, add yeast mixture and knead for around 5 minutes in machine until smooth and clear.
  4. Place in greased bowl , cover and leave until doubled in size.
  5. Knock back and mould into 3 loaves, place in oiled tins and leave to prove for about 30 minutes.
  6. Bake for 30 mins at 200C.
